Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. In fact, while you’re reading this article, two Americans will be diagnosed with the disease. Fortunately, researchers are working hard to find answers, and new findings show that a molecule occurring naturally in humans could possibly delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.

In early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, proteins clump in the brain. The clumps begin to grow and resemble long threads (the actual structures are called fibrils), and the threads continue to form throughout the brain. It’s like a chain reaction- clumps of proteins lead to the formation of more clumps.

New research at the University of Cambridge shows that a specific molecule called Brichos sticks to the threads, coats them, and stops the chain reaction. In laboratory studies, researchers worked with Alzheimer’s mouse models and saw very promising results.

By learning about the effects of Brichos, researchers are hoping to identify other molecules that might have similar effects and be beneficial to humans. Read more about this research here.
