Scientists are using zebrafish to understand more about two important genes associated with autism spectrum disorder. The two genes, SHANK3 and SYNGAP1 contributed to the development of autism when they were knocked out by the scientists. The researchers found that these fish showed developmental delays and abnormal behavior. The research shows that mutations and disruptions to these two genes can potentially lead to the development of autism. This research is bringing us that much closer to discovering what causes autism and how we can prevent and effectively treat it.
