Scientists have had a major breakthrough in using stem cells to treat chronic pain. Chronic pain that’s caused by damaged nerves is often resistant to painkillers. Using mice, researchers injected stem cells which then migrated to the site of the injury and helped relieve pain. This is advancing the research and therapy used to treat soldiers with spinal cord injuries and lower back pain. By researching how the stem cells alleviate pain, medical professionals will be able to actually treat these injuries instead of masking them with painkillers. This will help soldiers immensely on the road to recovering from nerve damage and those suffering from chronic pain.
