This is Rosemary, a mouse who started her career as a sentinel animal at a university. It wasn’t long before she got bored and chewed her way out of the cage looking for adventure. She came home with me and joined an all-female group of mice lovingly referred to as the Spice Girls. Her “sisters” are Nutmeg, Pepper, and Sage, other retired laboratory mice.

Compassion fatigue can be a difficult issue in working in the laboratory animal field, so having these girls helps keep me grounded and encouraged. Caring for Rosemary is one way that I try to give back to the animals that have given us so much.
