Tully Mars and Mr. Twain

A few years ago, these two little guys started having some health problems including bouts of mild to severe laminitis (inflammation of their feet) which is very painful and potentially life threatening. We discovered that both had a condition called PPID (Pars Pituitary Intermedia Dysfunction, also called Equine Cushing’s Disease), an endocrine disease of the pituitary gland. It can occur in horses of all breeds, but it’s common in miniature horses. Fortunately, this is a treatable condition, with a medication originally developed for Parkinson’s Disease in humans. With daily treatment, both are doing well and expected to have many more happy years and have resumed their hobbies which include eating, chasing crows, monitoring the neighborhood dog walkers, more eating, and occasionally pulling me around in a cart.
