About the Foundation for Biomedical Research
For people, for animals, for the common goodSpecializing in Health for Every Species
The Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) is America’s most experienced, trusted and effective nonprofit dedicated to improving human and animal health by promoting public understanding and support for biomedical research.
We believe that by illuminating the essential role animal research plays in changing health outcomes and defeating illnesses, we can help make lives even better.
Our Mission
Together with the National Association for Biomedical Research, we seek to create the resources to benefit the public, the government, and research professionals alike. Our mission includes:
- Being a voice for ethical research
- Creating materials to help research scientists communicate with the public
- Create public-facing materials to help students with their research
- Promote communications to heighten understanding
There can be no science in a vacuum. Everything we do is part of a conversation. We hope you’ll join it.

Our History
Since 1981, we’ve been promoting understanding and support for biomedical research. We’ve worked to include a diverse range of community voices to forge consensus, improve knowledge, and build respect. Through the years, our work has helped improve the health of people.
Our history gives us the foundation to continue working for the common good.
Public-Facing Research to Foster Dialogue and Understanding
Chances are, you have questions about animal research. Whether you’re a student doing a report, a concerned member of the public, or a clinician looking to talk to your community, you are looking for answers.
Our peer-reviewed research, outreach materials, and fact-sheets are designed to create that discussion. We hope you’ll use them to learn, to understand, and to educate others.
Please feel free to use our resources, and please reach out to us with any questions.

Promoting Ethical Research With Everything We Do
While we recognize the need for animal research, we do everything we can to promote limited, targeted, and ethical studies of animal models. These are our values:

Reduce
Create better procedures to require fewer animals in research, and ensure that only as many animals as reasonably needed be used in research studies

Refine
Create procedures that minimize or erase any pain or discomfort faced by animals that are involved in research studies

Replace
Encourage, support, and promote research into viable testing alternatives and adjunct treatments that produce accurate results
