Three hundred and fifty thousand-the number of people who have end stage renal disease (ESRD) and require dialysis 2-3 times a week. That’s a lot of time spent “out of commission” attached to a pump. A life-saving measure to cleanse the blood, but it’s double edged sword. The process itself can activate the immune system to cause inflammation that can result in heart problems as well as anemia. Why? Researchers believe it is the polymer content in filters used for the cleansing process. Still it is better than not having the dialysis, hence the double edged sword. But take heart, help is on the way!!!
Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, have developed a new compound called cp40 to restore the immune system balance. After just one dialysis session, healthy non-human primates showed strong activation of their immune system due to the polymer. With one dose of cp40 their immune system was back to normal!
Right now a drug called AMY-101, based on cp40, is in development for use in patients!!
