Researchers are still working hard to develop an Ebola vaccine, and in exciting news, scientists have developed an inhaled Ebola vaccine that has been able to protect laboratory monkeys. After just one dose of the aerosol vaccine, researchers were unable to find any trace of Ebola after the monkeys were exposed to the virus!
The next step is to work towards clinical trials in humans. One of the benefits of this vaccine is that trained medical personnel aren’t necessary, because it’s easy to administer. In many areas where Ebola has been prevalent, a lack of skilled medical workers is a problem. If this type of vaccine proves to be effective against Ebola in humans, the good news is that the ease of vaccine delivery would make it relatively easy to distribute to large populations.
