Here’s a science lesson for the day – mitochondria is where the action takes place in a cell. Often called “the powerhouse,” mitochondria takes nutrients in and turns it into energy. There are many different scenarios that can damage mitochondria, and one of these scenarios would be exposure to toxic chemicals. One thing that is known for sure is that veterans of the Gulf War were exposed to multiple different toxic chemicals during their deployment. Knowing of this exposure prompted scientists to study several individuals who have been struggling with Gulf War Syndrome. Their tests were successful in linking Gulf War syndrome to mitochondrial changes.
Research is moving forward to help these veterans. Read more about the study here: http://blogs.
