According to social worker, Rick Yount, “The key to mental health is having a sense of purpose.” I could not agree with this statement more.
Time and time again, soldiers get out of the military and become lost. I see this even more in the wounded community where soldiers are financially compensated when they leave the service. When a soldier leaves their highly engaging career and begins a sedentary life, many times living off of their disability, they lose their interest in anything worthwhile. I have seen it over and over. Not only have many of these soldiers lost the physical abilities that they once had, they have also lost their purpose.
What an unlikely form of medicine – giving purpose back to service members through a puppy training program. Service members are regaining their purpose in life by training future service dogs. This is a win-win situation and a perfect example of animals helping humans.
