FBR announces new board chair

Duke University neuro-oncologist Henry S. Friedman will lead board of directors

WASHINGTON – The Foundation for Biomedical Research board of directors is pleased to announce the election of Henry S. Friedman, MD, as board chair. Friedman is the James B. Powell Jr. Professor of Neuro-Oncology, Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics, Assistant Professor of Pathology, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University. He is the Co-Deputy Director of The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at the Duke Cancer Institute. Friedman was appointed to the foundation’s board of directors for a three-year term that began Jan. 1, 2021.

“Being elected to serve as the board chair of the Foundation for Biomedical Research is truly an honor,” said Friedman. “I look forward to advancing the foundation’s educational programs and media campaigns to increase public understanding and acceptance of ethical, humane animal research. Polls show that Americans are divided when it comes to animal research, even in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. I am optimistic the foundation will help move the needle for animal research through its proven education and media outreach initiatives, and I am thrilled to join in this effort.”

Friedman is an internationally renowned academic neuro-oncologist with extensive experience as a science educator. He has appeared three times on “60 Minutes,” authored more than 500 peer-reviewed articles and serves as senior editor of CNS Oncology. He is the former Associate Editor of Neuro-Oncology for the journal Cancer, a position he held for 15 years.

Additionally, Friedman is the featured scientific expert in the foundation’s signature Perceptions vs. Realities brochure, which has been distributed to more than 30,000 people nationwide. He is also the featured expert in the Spanish translation of the brochure distributed to thousands of people in Spain and Central and South America.
